Inserting figures
To attach a figure to an EndNote reference:
- Double click on the relevant reference in the central pane of your EndNote Library.
- Go to the References menu.
- Click on Figure and select Attach Figure.
- Click on Choose File, find the figure on your computer and click Open.
The figure will appear in the Figure field of your EndNote reference. You should add a description of the figure to the Caption field so that the figure has a caption when you add it to your Word document.
To insert a figure that is stored in an EndNote reference into Word:
- Place the cursor in the place where you wish to insert the figure citation in your Word document.
- In Word, click on the EndNote tab.
- Click on the Insert Citation drop-down menu, found at the left of the EndNote toolbar.
- Select Insert Figure.
- Search for the reference that contains the figure.
- Click on Insert.
EndNote places an in-text figure citation at the cursor location and labels the figure itself, including the caption. Figures are numbered in the order in which they appear in the document.
Inserting notes
You may wish to add a note to your reference list. You can use the Insert Note command to do this and also add an in-text citation for the note:

- In Word, click on the EndNote tab.
- Click on the Insert Citation drop-down menu, to the left of the EndNote toolbar.
- Select Insert Note.
- Type your note into the box and then click OK.
EndNote adds an in-text citation and adds the note to your reference list.
