Inserting citations from within EndNote
- Place the cursor in the place where you wish to insert a citation in your Word document.
- Go to your EndNote Library and highlight the reference you wish to import. Hold the Ctrl key on your keyboard to import more than one reference.
- Click on the Insert Citation icon on the toolbar within EndNote.
Your reference is entered as a citation in your document and the full reference will appear at the end of your document as part of an automatically generated reference list.
Tip: use only one EndNote library
When you are inserting citations and references into a Word document, it is advisable to use references from only one EndNote library, and to ensure that the EndNote Library you want to use is the one that is open.
Tip: footnote referencing styles
Some output styles, such as OSCOLA, are footnote styles where the full reference appears in the footnote. Longer pieces of work using a footnote style may also include all references in a bibliography at the end of the piece of work. In order to make references appear in the Word footnotes area:
- In Word, click on the References tab and then click on Insert Footnote.
- With the cursor in the footnote, go to the EndNote tab and insert a reference as normal.
