EndNote

EndNote is a reference management software package, also known as bibliographic software, which enables you to:

  • Create a personal database of references relevant to you, along with associated files.
  • Insert references into a Word document and format them automatically in a citation style of your choice.
  • De-duplicate references retrieved from multiple sources.
  • Share references with others.

To identify references you are advised first to search using Explore or bibliographic databases and then use EndNote to organise your references. For guidance on searching for references, see our Searching for Information guide.

Clarivate, the company which produces EndNote provides EndNote training videos, a good introduction to using the software. You can also work through this guide, which is based on EndNote Desktop for Windows, using the navigation menu

Turnitin

Turnitin is a program which checks your work for originality: that is, it searches through its database of published texts, webpages and student assignments to see if there are any areas which have a significant match to your work. Turnitin is NOT a plagiarism detector. Your tutor will use Turnitin to alert them to possible problems, but they are also familiar with your writing and with the literature in your field, and they will use their experience and academic judgement to identify any issues with your use of references.

  • You cannot rely on Turnitin to do the work of checking your references for you.
  • You still need to make sure that you understand when and how to cite your sources.
  • If you know how to do this, you may then be able to use Turnitin to help you with checking and improving your work.

Different Schools use Turnitin in different ways, but you may have the opportunity to submit a draft assignment before submitting your final version. This will produce a ‘Similarity Report’ which you can use to help you revise your work. Note that a Turnitin report with a low percentage does not guarantee that your work is free of plagiarism or other poor academic practice; the system does not detect all matches. You may contact the library writing center to review your draft paper using Turnitin.

SPSS

SPSS is a statistical analysis software and a good choice for users who are managing data and running statistical analyses only occasionally. Statistical options are more narrow than other platforms, but SPSS is easier to learn for beginners, with pull-down menu options.

Where to Find SPSS?

SPSS is installed on some of the computers in the library.
